LOS ALTOS HAS A LONG TRADITION AS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, RAISE A FAMILY AND RETIRE.

We have excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, beautiful natural surroundings and a friendly downtown. All of these attributes contribute to our consistently strong property values.

One specific portion of Los Altos, our Community Center Campus, is aging and in need of replacement.

In particular, the Hillview Recreation Center, which houses programs and services for children, teens, families and seniors, was built in 1945 as an elementary school. It is worn out and needs to be replaced.

In addition, our police and emergency operation center is outdated and overcrowded for a community the size of Los Altos.

Over the course of two years, the Los Altos City Council working with a committee of Los Altos residents, known as the Community Center Advisory Committee, has developed a plan to improve our community center and continue our community's legacy of providing quality facilities and programs for all Los Altans.

THE PLAN
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CURRENT FACILITIES?Some of the existing facilities on the community center campus are 65 years old and in urgent need of replacement. For example, the Hillview Recreation Center was never intended for its current use. In addition, our current emergency operation center and police station are outdated and overcrowded. Many of the buildings do not meet current seismic and safety standards. Roofs leak, many of the restrooms are frequently out of service and can't be used, outdated electrical systems are unreliable and cannot accommodate modern technology, heating and ventilation systems are worn out, doors and windows are not energy efficient, and offices and meeting spaces are too small to accommodate need and demand from Los Altos residents. WHAT IS THE PLAN?The Los Altos City Council working with the Community Center Advisory Committee, has developed a phased approach to address the most critical and urgent needs first. The first phase would include:Replacing the Hillview Recreation Center to bring it current with safety standards and make it accessible for people with disabilitiesProviding space for children's and teen's after-school programs, enrichment classes, arts, music and recreationProviding space for senior programs and services that keep them healthy, active, independent and connected to the communityReplacing the emergency operation center and outdated Los Altos Police Station to ensure stable communication during earthquakes or other disasters and to support the quickest possible emergency response timesUtilizing energy efficient green building practices to reduce operational costs and protect the environmentWHY ARE THESE PROJECTS BEING CONSIDERED NOW?The yearly cost to repair and maintain our aging facilities is a drain on our city budget. By completing these projects now we will be able to reduce our expenses with historically low construction costs and interest rates, allowing the projects to be completed for less.WHAT MIGHT BE INCLUDED IN FUTURE PLANS?Future improvements could include new soccer and baseball fields, a new Los Altos Library to accommodate technology and programs for children and teens, a community swim center and a community theater for music and arts programs. If Phase I is implemented, specific plans for the future phases will be presented for community input.HOW WOULD THE FIRST PHASE BE FUNDED?The City of Los Altos has set aside funding for a portion of the project, including for the proposed City Hall building. The remainder would be funded with a bond measure that would be presented to local voters for consideration.
